In last session's computer aided design lesson we looked at how we could paste different textures into fashion flats in photoshop.
In order to do this, I first copied and pasted my fashion flat that I was going to use (taken from the internet) into photoshop. I next copied my desired texture image from the internet and utelized the magic wand tool to select the area of the garment flat that I wanted to import the texture into. I stuck with looking at different fabric textures and so used a pink lace and silk fabric texture image in order to experiment with how these could look on the garment.
Once I'd selected the area to import the texture, I would go to edit>paste special>paste into and the image would then paste into the area of the fashion flat I chose. I would these use control T to select that texture and move and adjust it to my desired fit/look on the fashion flat. I really love how this worked out and think it could be a great technique/skill to use in the future in order to help invision what fabrics I could use on my garment designs. The process was relativley simple and effective.
For the final part of the session, we also looked at how we could create a layer mask e.g. with the text here in order to show the texture image through. The way I achieved this was first to type in my text, (here I used my name as an example) and pasted my chosen texture image into the document. Next it was really important to go to the layers section and ensure the text layer was above (and hence in front of) the texture layer. I then held control and clicked on the thumbnail of my text layer; this was an easy way of selecting the individual text that I wanted to create a mask from. Once selected, I clicked on the layer masks symbol and then clicked the eye on my original text layer to hide it, this then created a mask of my text layer, so that the texture could be seen showing through!
I'm really pleased with the results I've achieved and can't wait to carry foward these skills and ideas for use in my own garment design work. I think it's really important to have an understanding of how to digitalise design ideas as the impact of technology is ever-growing and I also believe it helps us achive a lot more precise and defined results with the additional ability of easily duplicating and altering designs without having to start again.
