DESIGNING IDEAS FOR PATTERN CRAZY

In recent garment construction lessons we have been looking at beginning to design ideas for pattern crazy, in particular looking at the trousers to start to curate samples and experiments.

For my Pattern Crazy garment, I’m looking to create something a bit more boundary pushing and outside of my comfort zone; so thinking about making a big statement trouser with potential added structures and shape through something like a cage.  I am also looking at different fastenings such as zippers and pull cords to see how I can manipulate shape - so thinking about having zips that undo to create new shapes and structures.  I am wanting to use this project to experiment with both my ideas and construction techniques, looking to go forward into a career in Costume.

Here are a few of my ideas so far, so I’ve looked at adding a side caging to make the structure/ recreate shapes found during research processes.  I’ve also looked quite a lot at ruffles and the layering of ruffles as well as thinking about the addition of horsehair to really make them stand-out.  I’ve also looked at cut-outs to try to recreate the structures/bonds of plant cells. - could this be something that I achieve through laser cutting?!

Other experiments I have done include ruching and curation of the lettuce hem on stretch jersey fabric - I’m looking at a wide range of construction techniques and ideas to push myself and then I can start to pick out the most successful outcomes to develop forward.

But overall, I’m looking forward to progressing further through the pattern crazy assignment brief and starting to bring together both garment designs and final pattern designs to create something really unexpected and challenging of my comfort zone…
