My final outfit for the opening night of the Tate modern was inspired by abstract expressionist artist Jackson Pollock, specifically his paining ‘Mural’.
I was really interested by the spontaneous and gestural spiral motions in the painting and so I wanted to recreate these in my final design. I used tie dye to create a spiral motion of colour on the trousers and used these same dyes for the spiral appliqué on the top. Using this against black contrasts e.g. of the ruffles and bodice top really helped make the colours pop, showing a similar definition as to what is seen in Pollock’s painting.
I really love how the colours work together and the addition of the ruffles bringing in new and exciting textures as we see built up in Pollock‘s Mural. I feel the spirals have worked really well, brining interesting shapes and abstract gestures into the work.
