STARTING TO MAKE MY TUTU GARMENT

Over the past week I have been looking at making my final tutu garment, involving making up the bodice corset, adding the steel boning, creating and the stuffed peplum as well as making up my final tutu skirt and the plate design.

Here are some images from the making of my tutu bodice, which was produced in a bright satin fabric and flat-lined with a cotton drill. I've also created boning channels into the seams using a bias tape and stitching to width of steel. The steel boning I have used is equivalent to what is used in industry for tutu bodices as this type of boning has a lot more flexibility to it for the dancer to be able to move as need be. I also added metal caps to finish the ends.

I was really pleased with how the bodice is looking as I focused a lot of time on detail and finishings, for example I finished the tutu edging with a satin bias tape which I then flat slip-stitched by hand to secure neatly and discreetly into-place.

I created the front lace panel with my own appliqué placement of ribbon, which I think looked quite effective. I also made my chocolate waist peplum, adding stuffing for a really playful effect and quite liked this because it felt very individual and different to my own design.

I've also made my ruffle edging in a light organza, which was tricky to work with because of its fragile, fraying qualities! However, I like how the ruffles move and stand up on the edges because of the light weight nature of the fabric.

My next steps making the tutu garment involve the curation of the skirt; gathering and attaching tulle layers to the panty, as well as making my plate design and adding the puff sleeve! I have also found some rectangular sequins which would work really well to make the bodice 'sprinkles' which I am really excited about.
