THE NUTCRACKER: REINVENTED

Over the course of this week I have been looking at creating my project proposal for FMP, where I am looking at creating dance costumes based on The Nutcracker and this week has been all about creating a visual project proposal to present to the class for critique...

For my presentation, I wanted to curate a very visual PowerPoint with fonts and images that link to my theme. I also played around with transitions and found a curtain draw transition which worked really well in relation to theatre and ballet.

Here are few images from my presentation which discussed all elements of the criteria, including research - primary and secondary as well as discussing where I would find my research, context and influences including why I chose the theme, how it relates to my career aspirations and a little background on my chosen theme, garments I am thinking of making and the techniques I want to use, looking at existing nutcracker's productions/costumes that could influence my ideas, discussing the fashion show as well as looking at how I will evaluate and get feedback on my ideas. I also included my weekly time plans to discuss how I planned and organised my project independently, as well as finally having included research into the client, showing how I will meet the brief throughout my project.

Not only did the making of this presentation help me to gather my thoughts and ideas together into one place to understand how I will meet the brief, but it was also something I really enjoyed making, especially since it was so visual in relation the my Nutcracker theme.

To complement my powerpoint presentation, I have also curated a physical scrapbook version of the content, which I handmade. I think this added a really nice touch as it was a more physical version of my work in the form of a book-like structure, which obviously links back to the original book version of the Nutcracker that was written all before ballet and movie adaptations.

I really enjoyed making this visual scrapbook, including images, stickers and accessories that I used to decorate and present each page in an exciting, visual way. I also looked to create an ongoing theme which would tie each page together in unity, as you would see in traditional books.

Here are a few images collated from my handmade scrapbook - I think the presenation is really fun and engaging. I also think there's something really nice about it being physical and the physical action of turing a page that draws us back to the idea of storytelling. I really like how the design of the scrapbook turned out, and I especially looked to make the layout and decorations on each page link back to my theme and the story, so for example, choosing themed flowers and stickers that relate back, e.g. blue snowflake cut-outs and shimmery tape that links to the land of snow in The Nutcracker.

I think my overall presentation for my FMP project proposal went really well - I think it was really colourful and visually engaging in a way that particularly linked back to my theme. There are a few improvements to be made and elements to add in, however, on the whole, I was pleased with how it all came together and I'm now looking forward to undertaking the project itself, working towards creating those three final costumes!....
