Last weekend I went to visit RHS Wisly Gardens to gather primary research and imagery to inspire my pattern crazy project on the theme of Plant Structures.
Wisley have recently opened their new Hilltop building, which houses their science department and laboratories, looking at the science of plants, and so this was a good place to visit to help me gain research and inspiration.
Looking around the building, I saw some incredible images of seed under a microscope, from Rob Kessler, who is an artist that looks to combine art and science in his work. The structural patterns and texture within these forms were so detailed and intricate.
Upstairs was where the laboratories were located, however, unfortunately these were closed on the day.
Afterwards I decided to have a little look around the greenhouse at any physical plant shapes/structures that could help to inspire my garment shape or pattern designs.
I saw some really unique and intriguing structures that could make to inspire quite an interesting final garment! I loved the sort of twisted structure of the cactus and the very much layered elects within other plants which I thought could be well interpreted through something like scallops.
Other close-up images like that of the back of the leaf show small, pattern-like details that exist on the serface of plants and could help to inspire shapes within my final pattern designs. Perhaps I could incooperate elements of the physical plants in line with their cells and microscopic material that they are made up from together to create more unexpected results.
Lastly, I visited the Library at Wisley Gardens where I found lots of books relevant to the theme - I was able to find some with quite a lot of imagery of the microscopic structures and cells within plants in theme, so this will be great to draw from as part of my visual research elements.
Overall, I feel really inspired by my visit to RHS Wisley and have a lot of ideas to take away with me as well as drawings from observation that I curated from some of the plant material I saw. I'm looking forward to delving further into my theme as well as looking at the work of artists and designers to push my ideas even more.
