A few weeks ago I watched Netflix's new series of the programme 'Next In Fashion', which is a fashion competition bringing together some of the most talented designers from around the world. Each programme and competition features a set theme to which the designers have to design and produce a final garment/s outcome during the set time period ready for runway and then judging from celebrity guests as well as show hosts Gigi Hadid and Tan France. I really enjoyed watching the show and wanted to speak a little bit about what I thought of it, some of my favourite look created and more!
The show has gained lots of popularity since the first series and, this season, featured incredible guest judges ans celebrities including Donatella Versace, Emma Chaimberlain, Bella Hadid, Jason Bolden and more..
Some of my Favourite Looks from this Series...
Group Nature Challenge: Megan, Danny and Amari's look
This look was from a group project based on the the theme of 'Nature' where designers were challenged to work with live plants to create inspired nature looks. What I love about this look is the really unique, bubbly puff trousers, which feature flowers almost exploding and blooming out from the sides of them, which I think is a really beautiful and creative image. I also think the bright orange works really well in relation to the theme as it feels as vivid as flowers. I also though the headpiece was really stunning and impactful to really bring the element of nature to life.
Bao's Camp themed Met Gala Look
This look was created for the Met Gala, whereby the theme was, 'Camp: Notes on Fashion'. And I think Bao's look worked really well as she combined this soft, yet playful pinks with exaggerated features like the massive skirt silhouette and repeated, oversized pockets.
The top is actually also shaped like pockets which I think is so playful and creative! - The look has so much impact and drama which is perfect for the met gala.
Amari and Nigel's collaborative looks
These two pieces were created in a collaborative project where designers had to work together to produce pieces which read both of their styles. The challenge, really is to make both of the designers signature looks seen without it becoming overruled by one designers signature style and I think these two designers achieved this really well as the hand-crafted, really playful textiles read Nigel's signature look, yet this has been beautifully combined with Amari's playful silhouettes and more feminine looks also. These elements combined made for really unique and one of a kind pieces which I love.
Desyree and Bao's collaborative looks
I really love how this collaboration turned out as the designers had quite distinctly different styles as one worked predominantly menswear and the other predominantly womenswear! I think they beautifully meshed these two styles to make really cohesive looks. I also think the tweed fabric choice felt really versatile and worked well. My favourite part was how, on the runway, the really made the looks interact with one another as the women passed the tweed jacket to the man to wear, again, showing versatility.
Bao's Swimwear Look
One of My absolute favourite looks was Bao's swimming costume from the swimwear challenge. I really like how she combined a flattering silhouette in a bold pink colour with these unique and really playful mesh overlays, which really adds a new element to the swimwear which I haven't so much seen before!
Nigel's Final Collection Looks
I also wanted to speak about a few of the looks from Nigel's final collection as I found theme to be so inspiring and unique.. - Throughout, you can see how the designers unique style is interpreted beautifully and cohesively in each and every one of his looks. I also think Nigel's personal, hand crafted textiles are really beautiful and I think it's so impressive to curate the textiles as well as sew the garment in such a limited amount of time!!
Which I loved about this look is the unique and stylish braiding all over the pants and jacket. It made the look feel so textural and fun, as well as creating a unique patterned-like look,
This was another look that I really liked from Nigel's collection. I absolutely love the double pant style as it felt so fresh and creative. The colours in the patchwork of the jacket are also really beautiful and give more of a feminine touch which I like. Things like the hat accessories and bags are also so unique and inventive, personal to Nigel's style.
Bao's Transformational Look
Another look I loved was Bao's transformational garment, which looked to interpret a transition from angel to devil sort of style. I think it was super impressive how sleek and easy the transition of the dress was compared to other garments seen in the challenge. The silky, shiny satin worked really well to create this beautiful angelic feel and the fiery red interpreting the devil. The only thing I would say, is that the sillohetted could have been a little more inventive as they perhaps look like something that's been seen before. However, given the time limit, I think this look was really well done.
Amari's Childhood Look
Another piece I absolutely loved was Amari's childhoood inspired garment as I found it so playful and inventive that she chose to base her look around the colourful hair clips her mum would dress her in as a child. The bold organge colour choice feels so sort of energetic and youthful, which I think works really well obviously in relation to the theme.
Overall, I really enjoyed watching series 2 of 'Next in Fashion', as I always find it to be so inspiring for my own work and, in general, a really exciting and fun programme to watch. There is definitely a lot I can take away from having watched it to put onto my own work, get inspired and push myself further also.
