WHITE SHIRT PROJECT

In recent garment construction lessons with Lareen we have been looking at creating a white shirt combining skills learned throughout collar and sleeve assignments.

Moodboard

The first stages of our projects consisted of creating an inspirational moodboard from only our own images and drawings/ samples.

For my moodboard I looked at images I'd taken on our V&A trip, combined with sleeve styles and samples explored throughout previous coursework/tasks.

I am thinking about taking forward the leg of mutton sleeve style combined with a trim lace collar. I also like the idea of adding cuffs with roleau loop fastenings (as sample created on moodboard).

My Final Design

After designing a few ideas, this is the idea I have come up with.

For my own take on the 'shirt' I've decided to go a different route by creating a much more fitted look!

I am also combing this with a draped pleated leg of mutton sleeve for lots of volume.

My bodice will have princess seams and a second extra seam as a design feature.

I have also decided to develop my design further by the addition of a few pin ticks at the centre front of my shirt!

My collar will be a sailor collar style, finished with a facing at the neckline. I am also opting for a lace trim edge detail!

To finish the hem of my shirt I wanted to create a thicker band with a stitched-on bow at the back or with a bow tie detail, inspired by garments seen at the V&A.

Starting the Making

During lessons we have started to create patterns and an initial toile. The focus this project is on time magagment and so we will have to complete the top within lesson time only.

After making the pattern I decided to start on my toile.

I used a sleeve sample created in experimentation work (previously) to demonstrate how my sleeve will look, since I need to be thinking about how I can cut corners with time.

I'm really happy with how my top is looking so far and I think I have kept-up well with time limits, producing more than I could've thought I'd complete in the time given!

I'm really excited to start work on my final top to create the finished outcome! - I also think working to time limits is really helping me improve my skills and get more work completed in the time given. - I think I will really benefit from this in future.
