In patterncutting lessons we have been looking at our new theme of architecture, going around the college to take pictures we can be inspired by and draw upon to create design ideas.
As a response to this, we have been designing, drafting and toiling peplums inspired by the images, particularly looking at how we can recreate create certain shapes, lines and textures.
Here I had a go at using knife pleats to recreate the sharp lines and textures as seen in the pictures. I really like the illusion of multiple layers and depths build up bny the use of pleats and I’d like to experiment with how I could hold these pleats (when made up in fabric) outwards in place e.g. using a heavyweight interfacing in order to give them a much more structural, three-dimensional feel.
I also created a peplum toile adding folds into the fabric and lining them with a bias binding to create angular, geometric lines and shapes.
I really liked the effect of the bias binding and the shapes created by folds. I then decided to take the design even further by creating a full circle skirt which added so much volume and layers, relating well back to the theme and images. I like how it sits underneath the folds, building up layers and dimensions.
I'm really excited by our new theme of architechture and can't wait to begin designing and creating much more 3D pieces!
