FINAL SKIRT PROJECT

My final skirt project for my first term at fcot, based on the client of Liberty London, looks back at the theme of fruit, making direct links to my sketchbook research work produced at the start of the course.

The skirt consists of two main pannels - knife pleats and a top pannel on the curve; including a scalloped ruffle inserted at the seam. My inspiration for this garment draws on my exploration of the fruit theme, particularly looking at cherries and their form. I wanted to create a garment that consisted of many layers and textures, representative of textures in fruit (inside and out). The idea for the scallops reflect the shapes and curves of cherries, and I really like the way that they drape on the curve. The top pannel I actually hand tie-dyed in order to acieve this tonal range of pinks and purples that I think again, explore the range of texture and colour within fruits. I also machine embroidered this playful cherry print pattern onto my skirt, as a reflection of Liberty's unique and fun patterns.

As my first garment produced on the course, I'm really pleased with how this turned out - I feel that the colours work really well together & their bright and vibrant nature are really reminiscent of Liberty's iconic designs. The embroidery also helps to evelate the garment into something seemingly a lot more high-end & is a beautiful finishing detail.

There were a few things that I'd improve about my final skirt, however I think it's important to reflect upon how much I've learned so far and the fact that this is only my first project. I'm excited to see how my skills develoup as I begin creating more and more designs.
