During this term of patterncutting we will be designing and making a final skirt inspired by one of our themes from our first research project on organic structures. I chose to do my skirt on the theme of fruit, thinking about bright and vibrant colour schemes and interesting shapes and textures.
I'm really excited for this project and the creation of out first final garment/design on the course! In this weeks lesson we started looking at techniques to add into our skirt designs for added volume, structure and fulness, etc. giving us more freedom and ideas when it comes to designing. The techniques we explored include pleats - knife and box, godets, skirt paneling/gored skirts, skirt yoke's and I even additionally looked at ruffles as this is something I'm keen to include in my design.
Box Pleats
Pleats aren't actually something I'd initially though about for my skirt but after producing some samples, I'm really pleased with the outcomes and the effect of fullness created by the pleats.
Knife Pleats
Knife pleats add a lot of dimension to a garment. I love the unique effects and fullness created.
Godets
Godet's create really interesting efffects and a flowy, elegant feel.
Ruffles
I was really interested to find out that a ruffle is actually made from a spiral/circle pattern that creates curls adding interesting shapes and flow to a garment.
I really enjoyed experimenting with these new techniques and am really interested to see how I can now develoup and use them in my own ideas/designs. I'm really looking foward to bringing these ideas together for my final skirt garment!!
