DIGITAL PATTERN DESIGN

In recent computer aided design lessons we have been looking at how to create a pattern digitally in order to be able to produce digital pattern designs in response to the natural forms brief.

We did this using adobe illustrator by first choosing an image related to natural forms that we then transformed into vector images using 'image trace' (meaning they then could be edited as a digital artwork). We then used the swatches tool to create the basis of the repeated pattern; choosing alignment and quantities, etc.. Once we were then happy with the basis pattern created, we used the rectangle tool to select and import that swatch to fit the whole screen. It took me a few attempts playing around with the swatch to create a pattern that was larger and more repeated with smaller images as this is what I found to be more exciting and visually stimulating.

I'm really pleased with the patterns created and definitely enjoyed being able to bring my ideas together digitally to create proportion and balance within the design. I hope to next be able to import my own images and images of my drawings to then create from.
