DYES & VARNISH EXPERIMENTS

In this weeks textile's lesson we looked at using layers of dye and varnish to re-create sections of our repeat patterns that are going towards creating a final wrapping paper design.

The dye was of an initial powder consistency and so needed to be mixed in with water. We first filled the palette with all different dye colours that could then be mixed, etc. to create a base/background colour. When using the dye we wore aprons and gloves as part of health and safety procedures.

I used a sponge to paint the dye onto the page. After painting a background layer the dye had to then dry before going in with the varnish. The varnish created a sealed layer that could then be painted over again with another colour in order for the lines/shapes painted to show through with the initial dye base colour. I worked from my repeat patterns done in my sketchbook, that looked at insects as the theme - I worked in varnish to paint out these shapes (insects) and create sections of the patterns in dye & varnish.

I really enjoyed working with this technique as I was able to create really fun and playful colours/contrasts, looking at the shapes and structures of the theme.
