MY FIRST SKIRT TOILE

Hey guys,

During my first term of patterncutting we have been looking at constructing and making our first skirt toile.

The first toile we made was a pencil skirt with four darts, a petersham lined waistband, lapped zip and a button and buttonhole. We also had the choice of adding either a vent or split and of course also deciding the skirt length. I chose to make two side splits and adjusted the pattern to make a knee-length skirt.

For my first project, I'm really pleased with how the result turned out. I enjoyed going through the whole design process, taking an initiall idea and then making it into a reality. I'm really happy with the neatly concealed lapped zip I produced as well as the tidy finish of a blid hem. However, of course there are always going to be elements I could improve on such as my buttonhole where I struggled working through the thickness of the petersham and with sizing up to the button, as well as the darts- I learnt it's always important to stop where the marking is, as accidentally sewing further resulted in an almost pleat-like look.

I'm really looking foward to learning more about garment construction and sewing as we explore the skirt project further! I'll next be making an A-line skirt with an invisible zip and I hope to learn and improve every time I make something new!
